ICsetup

Setting up the I-Comply suite.

ICsetup is the heart of I-Comply. All complex setup operations are done here. This makes your legaliser and safe area plugins simple to use and free of difficult lengthy menus and controls. ICsetup consists of 3 sections.

  • Legaliser Setup. (these settings apply for both LegalFast and IClegaliser)
  • Safe Area Setup.
  • Licensing setup.

The Legaliser.

Adjusting an existing Legaliser setting.

It is strongly recommended that you set the “Generate Test Signal” dropdown to “Luma Ramp” (or other suitable test signal) and use Lumetri Scopes to observe the effect of the legaliser. Legalisation (Signal Gamut compliance) is really something for a television engineer or experienced television video editor to set up. If you are not sure of this subject please just use the factory presets!

  • Press the “Edit Legaliser Preset” button.
  • All the adjustment parameters will then be revealed.
  • All values are in percentage points with 100 being peak white and 0 for Black. Sub blacks are indicated as negative values.
  • High and Low detail are also in percentage points but it is essential to watch the effect these have on the luma ramp to understand their operation fully. (See below notes on Detail Adjustment (Soft Clipping))
  • Legalisation modes can be RGB, where limiting is applied only to the RGB components of the video signal. YRGB, where limiting is applied to the RGB components of the video signal and the Luminance (in that order). Composite, where limiting is applied to the analog composite domain. This effects both luminance and composite chroma with settings for both. Composite and RGB where an RGB limiter is applied before the composite limiter.

Notes on Detail adjustment (soft clipping)

ICsetup allows your signal to be soft clipped. This can preserve detail which might just be clipped off (clouds in a bright sky for example). The example below shows the luma ramp test signal under the EBU103 2020 setting. Notice the major portion of the ramp stays linear (untouched) but at 0 and 100 the slope changes with the effect that the detail that was between 0 and -10 and between 100 and 110 has been compressed to within the EBUR103 allowed range. If we had simply Clipped the waveform at 105% and -5% (The EBU103 allowed range) we would have completely lost any detail between 105 -110 and -5 and -10.

It is worth noting as a suggestion that you do not start your ramp above 0 or below 100. If you start your low soft clip above 0 this will have the effect of “lifting” your blacks above 0. If you start your high soft clip below 100 this will have the effect of compressing your whites below to below 100. This is generally not desirable but is in your hands if you wish to do so!

Legaliser Preset create/edit Controls.

User Presets

You will see in the “Select Preset” dropdown the last presets are User Preset 1 – 10. These allow you to edit your own preset in the same way as described above. These can also be renamed and made visible in the IClegaliser and LegalFast plugins.

Make Legaliser Preset Visible

This control if checked makes the legaliser preset visible in the preset dropdown of the IClegaliser and LegalFast plugins. This control allows you to make settings that you never use disappear!

Rename Legal Preset

Pressing this button will enable you to rename a preset. It will bring up a dialogue box for you to write in your new name. Please note that the new name does not immediately become visible. Premiere pro will need to be restarted. You will notice however the old name always appears in the dialogue box meaning you can check it if necessary.

Save Preset

This is the only way for your preset to become permanent! If you do not press this when you have made your adjustments and move on to another preset, your adjustments will be lost! So press this when you are happy with your new preset!!!

Other Legaliser Utilities

Generate Test Signal

This dropdown allows you to generate a test signal as the input to the legaliser. This combined with the Lumetri scopes are your best tools to “see” the setup of a new or edited preset.

Bypass Legaliser

This does what it says on the tin! This will bypass the legaliser so you can compare pre and post legalisation.

Restore Legaliser Presets

This button will restore the standard “Factory Presets” to the original settings. It will NOT however touch any of your new user presets that were made from User Presets 1 – 10. This setting starts unfolded, so it is not visible until you select it.

The Safe Area Generator

A note on safe area TV standards – IMPORTANT!!!

The safe areas are format dependent (unlike legaliser presets). You will find a different set of factory presets for old SD525 line standards than you have for HD1080i. This means that the set of safe areas that you are editing ONLY apply to the television format of the clip that you applied ICsetup to. If you create a new safe area in ICsetup on a 1080i clip you will NOT find it when you apply ICsafeArea to a SD625 picture. If you want to create a new safe area then make sure you apply ICsafeArea to a clip of the format you want to change.

Adjusting safe areas.

To adjust a safe area, firstly select select the safe area using the “Edit Safe Area Preset” dropdown. You can choose from the standard factory presets to edit them or from the User Preset 1-5 if you want to create a new safe area.

Safe Area Editing Controls
  • Check the “Show Safe Area” tickbox. This will make the safe area visible.
  • Press the “Edit Safe Area Preset” button and the controls for this preset will appear as shown above.
  • Adjust the Left/Right/Top/Bottom controls as required
  • Check the “Make SA Preset Visible” tick box so that this preset will be visible in the list of the ICsafeArea plugin.
  • Press the “Rename Safe Area” button to rename the preset. This will NOT take immediate effect in the ICsetup safe area dropdown. Premiere pro will need to be restarted.
  • Press the “Save Safe Area” to make your preset to become permanent! If you do not press this when you have made your adjustments and move on to another preset, your adjustments will be lost! So press this when you are happy with your new preset!!!
Show Safe Area

Check this box to display the safe area.

Restore Safe Area Presets

This button will restore the standard “Factory Presets” to the original settings. It will NOT however touch any of your new user presets that were made from User Presets 1 – 10. This setting starts unfolded, so it is not visible until you select it.

License Management

The License management part of ICsetup is duplicated in all the other plugins. One slight difference to the other plugins license management is that ICsetup is the only plugin you can use to Transfer a perpetual Eyeheight BroadcastSafePP license to I-Comply. More about that later.

Free 30day Trial

I-Comply comes with a free 30 day trial. When you start up ICsetup or any of the other plugins you will see the following.

If you already have the Eyeheight BroadcastSafePP product with a software (computer locked) license you will get the option to transfer it to I-Comply after you register with us.

Press the “Get Free 30 Day License” button and you will get the following button which you simply press.

At this point you will be fully licensed for a period of 10 days. Simple!

After 10 days, if you use the plugin, you will be required to register. When you apply the plugin you will get the following.

Pressing the “Register” button will cause your default bowser to open at the following page.

Once you have registered (Note your email is very important for moving your license). You will get a further 20 days free trial.

Once your 30 day free trial is finished, when you apply the plugin you will get the following.

  • “Purchase or Hire I-Comply” – will take you online to purchase or hire the plugin. Hiring the plugin, even for a day, is enough to get a job done. This is an OpEx (Operational Expenditure) model where you just charge on to your client for legalisation services. If you use legalisation regularly it may pay to buy a perpetual license to I-Comply.
  • “TRANSFER EYEHEIGHT LICENSE” – If the system detects that you already have an Eyeheight BroadcastSafe perpetual software license you will get the option to transfer your license to I-Comply. PLEASE NOTE you will then lose your BroadcastSafePP license. It is a one way ticket but the Eyeheight System is now static and will be unsupported by Complete Plugins after the release of I-Comply. Once you transfer the license you will have full use of I-Comply. This button will not go away. You can do this now or at any point in the future, there is no urgency.
Manage License –> Move License

When this Button is pressed your default browser will open and take you to the online license management. See below.

Here you will see a list of all your computers that you register under the single email address. If you just tick boxes in “DEALLOCATE FROM” and “ALLOCATE TO” and press “RE-ALLOCATE NOW” you will swap your license from one computer to another.

License Type –> Make License Online/Offline

If you are working somewhere with no internet connection or strong security firewalls you can move your license offline. When you do this it will last one week and work with no internet connection during that period. The catch is that you must do this WITH an internet connection so remember to do it before you move to that location!
